STREAM X'

x' (x prime) means that this is the second time using stream number x, so x'' would mean the third time using the same stream etc etc

We first calculate the heat gained by the system with the heaters in the plant using the formula:

We then calculate the temperature difference to plug into the equation

so what's the best solution?

We recommend…

                                SOLUTION 1

… savings are

highest overall

Out of all of the systems/solutions provided, systems 1 and 4 have the lowest costs both over 1 year and over 5 years as pictured on the graphs to the right and above, however system 1 provides slightly more saving overall in 5 years. Therefore we have chosen that one as our best solution.

For our calculations, we used heat exchangers between streams and hot/cold water to bring streams to the exact desired temperature. However, if we do not cool/heat the streams to the exact temperature

desired, there would be an even greater amount of money saved throughout the 5 year

If we take that approach, for example, one stream was cooled for 2 degrees in order to reach the desired temperature of 40 degrees celsius, if it's not necessary to cool to the exact desired temperature, the overall running cost of the plant would consistently drop throughout the 5 years, meaning the overall total savings would be higher than it already is right now.

The solution we have chosen saves 76% of the current cost of the plant. Therefore we suggest investing in 4 heat exchangers and using 2 coolers as this will provide significant savings of £959,000 in the next 5 years.

Please note that we have not included details for solutions 8 to 16 on our website. If you would like us to send you the calculations or a plant schematic for these options, please get in touch using the below contact form.
